What African bettors play most

The research company GeoPoll surveyed 2,866 people in six of the continent's largest betting markets (Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania and Uganda) between 24 June and 16 July 2026. Its Betting in Africa 2026 report asked bettors which product they play most.

Country What stands out
Uganda Football is the main product for 84% of bettors
Nigeria Football is the main product for 81%
Tanzania Football is the main product for 78%
Kenya 24% name Aviator as their main product, the highest share of the six
South Africa Casino games lead at 36%, ahead of football at 29%, with lotteries at 16%

Football: still the heart of the market

Football betting built Africa's online gambling industry. English and European leagues are followed closely, local leagues add volume, and small stakes on accumulators with long odds are common. For many bettors, a casino lobby is something they discover inside a sportsbook app rather than a separate destination.

Aviator and the crash game boom

The most striking change in recent years is the rise of crash games, led by Spribe's Aviator. A crash round lasts seconds: a plane takes off, a multiplier climbs and you cash out before it flies away. That format suits mobile play on limited data, low stakes and short breaks in the day. In Kenya, nearly a quarter of bettors in the GeoPoll survey named Aviator as their main product.

The speed that makes crash games popular also makes them easy to over-play. Each round carries a house edge, and dozens of rounds can pass in a few minutes. Our explainer on how the Aviatrix crash game works covers the mechanics, the RTP and why no betting system can beat the edge.

South Africa: a casino market

South Africa stands apart. It has a long tradition of land-based casinos, and in the GeoPoll survey casino games, not football, are the most common main product. Slots and table games dominate there, and lotteries are more important than in the other markets surveyed. Rules on which online products are allowed also differ from the rest of the region, so players should check what is permitted locally.

Mobile money and access

Across East and West Africa, mobile money wallets made it possible to deposit and withdraw small amounts instantly without a bank account or card. The GeoPoll report links this directly to the mobile-first shape of the market. Easy deposits are convenient, but they also make spending harder to notice. Setting a deposit limit and a weekly budget is the simplest protection; our responsible gambling guide explains how.

How Africa compares

Compared with Europe, where casino games are now the largest share of online revenue, and Latin America, where mobile slots such as Fortune Tiger lead searches, Africa's market is still built on football, with crash games as the fastest-growing casino product. Read our guides to popular casino games in Europe and in Latin America to see the contrast.

Tips for players

  1. Check that the operator is licensed in your country.
  2. Read the RTP and rules of any casino or crash game before you play.
  3. Ignore "Aviator predictor" apps and signal groups; crash points are random.
  4. Keep betting money separate from money for essentials.
  5. Understand bonus terms before accepting one; see how casino bonus systems work.
